A hybrid grape variety developed in the first half of the 20th Century in Stellenbosch, it has been a mainstay of South Africa since the 1960's. Coming from the merging of Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Pino-tage) it was particularly suited to the hotter climate of the Southern Hemisphere where Pinot Noir is often incredibly difficult to grow.
